Synthetic rope
Increasingly, the steel cable of winches is replaced by synthetic rope. This improves break strength, safety and ease of use. Because steel cable reaches a point where it permanently deforms, it has to be replaced sooner. With synthetic rope, this is much less the case, because the energy in the rope is converted into head and not in elasticity.
